Hurricane Melissa is projected to escalate to a rare highest-level hurricane as it turns toward the Caribbean island, bringing life-threatening flash flooding and landslides.

The cyclone, which recorded wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is now shifting toward the northwest in the Caribbean and is projected to hit the coast by Tuesday, according to hurricane specialists.

Advisories of power cuts and structural damage have been issued as the hurricane brings up to 76cm of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as thirteen feet above normal levels. "Find safe refuge immediately," inhabitants have been urged.

This hurricane is the thirteenth cyclone in this year's Atlantic storm period, which normally finishes in the eleventh month.

Highest-Level Cyclone Threat

A category five hurricane is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 157mph.

Although Melissa is set to diminish in strength to a category four cyclone before arriving at Jamaica, meteorologists said there was "very little practical difference in the total effects" upon making contact with land, and that the cyclone will be "at least that intensity" when it hits the island.

Immediate Readiness Measures

With tropical storm-level winds and rain predicted to begin ahead of it passes over Jamaica's central region - including potentially the capital, Kingston - advisories indicate that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"A multi-day period of damaging winds and intense precipitation are underway and will cause severe and deadly rapid water accumulation and many landslides," counseled climate experts.

Jamaican Prime Minister the official said: "I understand that there are numerous residents who are concerned, who are deeply troubled, and appropriately: worry is natural.

"Yet the best way to manage nervousness and any nervousness and anxiety is to be prepared."

Inhabitants are being instructed to protect their properties with sandbags and timber panels, and to gather essentials.

Broader Impact

Alerts are also ongoing for parts of Haiti such as the capital, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and Cuba's eastern region, where this storm is expected to bring analogous consequences by the middle of next week.

Rock slides already being caused by the cyclone have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Projected Trajectory

This weather system is predicted to cross the island nation by Wednesday before moving through the Greater Antilles and out into the Atlantic Ocean.

By the time it makes contact with the Caribbean nation, it is forecast to have reduced to a third-level cyclone.

Environmental Context

Even though it is difficult to connect individual weather events to climate change, researchers say it is resulting in climate patterns increasingly frequent and more extreme.

Warmer oceans generate additional humidity in the atmosphere, helping fuel the creation of hurricanes.
